A Note for Science Honors Applicants

If you would like to apply to complete the Science Honors Program AND the McNair Scholars Program simultaneously, you may.  Please indicate that below and complete the contact, demographic AND academic program and goals information on this application.  In lieu of completing the rest of the McNair application (with a personal statement and letters of reference), you will submit a copy of your Science Honors application materials to the McNair program office in Hertz 109 (email:

After we review your materials, you will be invited to interview with the McNair Advisory Committee.  If you are admitted, you will be admitted to both the Science Honors AND McNair Scholars Programs.

Budget exigencies permitting, Science Honors-McNair Scholars will receive their research, housing and board stipends through McNair ($~3700), while their mentors will receive release time and stipends through Science Honors, and a travel and supplies budget from McNair.  Research funds for the scholars' projects will be provided by both McNair AND Science Honors, subject to final budget availability.

Federal law requires that McNair Scholars be first-generation college students who meet certain income requirements AND/OR are a member of a group underrepresented in post-baccalaureate education. Additionally, you must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident to qualify.

The term "low-income individual" means an individual whose family's taxable income for the preceding year did not exceed 150 percent of the poverty level amount.

The figures shown under family income represent amounts equal to 150 percent of the family income levels established by the Census Bureau for determining poverty status. The poverty guidelines were published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the Federal Register, Vol. 76, No. 13, January 20, 2011, pp. 3637-3638.
