Of all mental health disorders, anxiety disorders affect the greatest number of children and adolescents.  However, there are minimal tools to use with youth experiencing anxiety. This presentation will provide a working group structure and tools to support adolescents with anxiety-related challenges. During the session, the presenters will review their 10-week group process; provide an outline and activities for the audience to utilize within their own practice, and explore a measurable group response tool. The goal is for the audience to be able to walk away from the workshop with resources to use to address adolescent anxiety from a group lens.

This presentation will describe the heroin epidemic in the United States and specifically the impact it has on Minnesota. It will outline contributing factors to the epidemic and identify effective prevention and treatment measures. Audience discussion will be encouraged.

After more than 25 years in practice and over 3,500 ADHD evaluations completed, the presenters of this workshop have acquired a vast collection of effective treatment recommendations for ADHD. The focus of this workshop is on interventions for managing attention and reducing distractibility, planning and organizing, dealing with stress, optimizing nutrition, getting enough exercise, improving sleep, managing unpredictable behaviors, and addressing social difficulties. Participants will leave with specific, practical interventions they can start using immediately. Professionals who work with clients with ADHD may find the material helpful, and the practical nature of the presentation makes it useful for parents of children with ADHD as well.

Children and youth who have endured stressful experiences in their lives may be especially challenging to work with. They may be overly disruptive or withdrawn, and exhibit many kinds of challenging behaviors and mental health concerns. However, children and youth can be resilient to stress and trauma through supportive relationships with consistent and caring adults. In this presentation, the presenter will share scientific research and practical strategies from her book Bridging the Relationship Gap and from her experience working with an elementary school that has adopted trauma-sensitive learning practices. Sara will also discuss some of the emerging research on the adolescent brain, and the second “window of opportunity” for resilience in adolescence. Participants will learn approaches for working one-on-one with children to build resilience to stress, and discuss trauma-sensitive organizational practices that shape school environments and promote student learning and success.

Participants will:

  • Learn what science tells us about how stress and trauma affect the developing brain and contribute to children’s challenging behaviors.
  • Identify strategies they can use to build strong relationships and approach challenging behaviors of children and youth in a trauma-sensitive way.
  • Gain insight into how infusing trauma-sensitive approaches can change school environments to promote student resilience and learning.
  • Share their own experiences and practical suggestions about working with kids facing adversity.

Working in a small office, in a classroom, or as a home visitor does not limit one’s ability to use sensory regulation interventions with highly active or distressed children and youth. In this workshop, participants will identify the differences between sensory intervention categories and how they can be applied to a range of emotional and behavioral issues. Attendees will explore which categories may be a good fit for their work settings and for their own personal preferences and temperament. Additionally, participants will have the chance to make examples of sensory tools to take and put into practice!

COMPLETED 6. Ethical Practice and Electronic Communication: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

This workshop will apply Strom-Gottfried’s Six-Question Model to ethical decision-making and practice in the context of electronic communication. This session will provide a space to step out of our automatic attachment to our phones and other electronic media to consider the intersection of practice and ethics as they are often mediated by electronic media. Participants are encouraged to bring a one paragraph description of an ethical dilemma that can be addressed in a process of “testing” the decision-making model.

Following the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate a six-point ethical decision-making model
  • Apply this model to practice dilemmas centered around electronic media
  • Articulate a plan for ethical electronic communication in their work settings

Working effectively with youth and parents who have lived through attachment disruptions and relational trauma requires a specific set of skills and perspectives not often taught in clinical training. It requires an ability to see behavior as cues to survival needs, to actively engage family relational systems, and to tolerate, at times, explosive expressions of fear and loss while maintaining the ability to draw out humor, play and delight. No one best practice provides a complete toolbox; attunement, curiosity and self- reflection skills are essential. During this session, integrative therapy interventions will be demonstrated, practiced and role-played. The training will begin and end with mindfully naming the impact of relational trauma on those who are professional healers and sowing seeds of resilience in the clients they serve.
